An elderly couple from Devon are believed to be the oldest newly weds in the UK to date.
Earlier this year, Penny Cooper who is 90 years old, asked John Dawkins aged 89 to marry her in a leap year proposal, after the pair met at a local charity event nine years ago and discovered that they had much in common - John served as a Royal Navy Commander, whilst Penny served in the Wrens.
The happy couple who boast a combined age of 179 years, married in ceremony at their local registry office in Honiton, Devon last week.
The new Mr and Mrs Dawkins, who are both from the town of Exmouth, managed to outdo the previous UK record holders of the oldest newlyweds title - 93 year old James Mason, and his 84 year old bride Peggy Clark, who also wed in Devon last year.
John became Penny’s carer and the pair lived at Johns home around a year and a half ago when Penny unfortunately suffered a stroke. She was then moved to a local nursing home to receive adequate care, although John visits her there every single day.
Mr Dawkins said in an interview with a local newspaper:-
“It was absolutely excellent. I would have been a very grumpy old man if I had not met Penny. Now I have a greater incentive to live to 100.”
