Some couples choose to celebrate their marriage with a civil partnership rather than a traditional wedding ceremony and there isn’t a great deal of disparity between the two.

The main difference is that there are no religious implications in a civil ceremony. A civil marriage is sealed by the exchange of spoken vows and a civil partnership is formed by both parties signing the relevant documentation,

Civil ceremonies are usually held in a register office and performed by an official registrar, although they can be carried out at a wide range of venues that have been sanctioned to house civil ceremonies if the registrar is prepared to be present. Permitted venues often include stately homes or other prominent or prestigious settings including hotels or restaurants licensed by the local authority.

A marriage in a register office was at one time the only option for divorcees wishing to remarry or couples opting to marry outside of their religious faiths or indeed for those who had no religious beliefs.

Since the 1994 Marriage Act which permits civil ceremonies to occur at licensed venues, the register office appears to have decreased in popularity and the growing number of couples who opt to marry there expect an uncomplicated but legally recognized wedding which often precedes a further private blessing or a wedding abroad.
