When Sian Davies and Craig Wilson from greater Manchester got married recently there was more than magic in the air - there was an owl!
During the ceremony at the White Hart Inn, near Oldham, the barn owl named Fudge landed on the grooms arm, bearing a pouch which held the couples wedding rings.
Ten month old Fudge belongs to a cousin of the bride who runs a local falconry and Sian and Craig’s wedding was in fact the second that she had appeared at.
Also present on the big day was Cracker, the couples Staffordshire bull terrier who donned a short and tie for the nuptials.
Sian aged 25 said of their unusual choice of ring bearer:-
“We wanted to do something a bit different and the thought of an owl flying the rings to us seemed incredibly romantic. It felt very special when it happened, although she was a bit reluctant to fly at first.
I was nervous, but it was great. It wasn’t anything to do with Harry Potter, but I think people have taken that as our theme.”
Fudge was accompanied by the bride’s cousin, Helen Chadfield who said: -
“She’s been practising quite a lot and works with noisy children most of the time, so she wasn’t too fazed by the guests.
She’s at a special weight, so she’s quite hungry and noisy. Owls won’t fly unless they need to feed, but she had a good meal after the ceremony.”
